The Maldives is an archipelago consisting of 1190 coral islands grouped into 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean southwest of India. They cover a surface of 90,000 square kilometres and the islands lie scattered over a length of 820 kilometres. The total land area is only 298 km² of which the largest island covers 5 km². About 200 islands are inhabited and on another 88 islands touristresorts have been established.

The Maldives belong to the top 3 of most beautiful dive destinations in the world with more than 3,000,000 dives every year.
